Janet Gallagher has established a creative practice of a hybrid nature over the past 30 years. Exploring printmaking, collage, sculpture, textiles and installation, she has cultivated a rich personal symbolism and idiosyncratic technique.
Her use of scrap-heap materials – sewn, strung and stitched – thread together psychological topographies and natural morphology.
Her work follows paths and layers of identity, change, connection and disconnection and the physical and psychic environments in which we exist, working with layers, as a means of exploring perception and experience of moment or place.
In mapping the micro and macro alike, she searches for signs and cycles of renewal and beauty, often reclaiming everyday materials in an intertwining the mundane and spiritual. Janet’s allegorical vignettes offer intriguing layers and dimensions to contemplate.
Janet is based in Adelaide on Kaurna Country & has lived & made work in North Queensland, Melbourne & Darwin. She is interested in opportunities for experimentation, collaboration & bringing her art into variety of settings to explore potential via a variety of mediums or workshops.
For over a decade she has been committed to working with therapeutic art across a range of settings including Older Peoples Mental Health Unit.
From 2017-2021 she facilitated workshops in the community exploring Altered Book Art Journaling along with workshops for children exploring printmaking with natural, found & recycled materials. In 2023 in-person workshops began again.
She is part of a collective of artists working at Parallel Studios with Laneway Print Studio & The Pod Gallery in St Peters SA which formed mid 2022. parallel-studios-adelaide.square.site
