Blankets Re-imagined...Woven @ the Mill
part of SALA 2015 & h.ARTS inaugural exhibition. 1st August - 31st August Building 21, Onkaparinga Woollen Mill, Lobethal 10.30 am - 3.30 pm, Each weekend in August or by appointment, ring 0448 320 096. http://hillsandart.blogspot.com.au Artists were invited by h.ART (hills and Art) to incorporate Onkaparinga woolen blanket fabric samples to respond to the iconic material & themes of reusing, repurposing & remaking. You can read more on the h.Art blog page. For Woven @ the Mill I wanted to explore this one rich material on an intimate scale to see what would emerge and to extend my work in textile collage. Letting go of preconceived outcomes brings challenge & discomforting edges, quite the opposite of the blankets satin-edged mission. This contemplative practice of wander & wonder encompasses place, people, origin and process. With many threads to follow, at one moment recalling Shamanic wool & wax paintings, at another, Rothko- esk shapes & colour experiments, and in yet another, imagined sounds and lives from these mills & my long-gone weaving kin from England & Scotland. |
